Big drop in computer sales according to new research on the effects of coronavirus pandemic. Research by Canalys reveals that computer shipments decreased by 8% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2020. Let us also point out that it has been the biggest drop in the last four years.
This is because production plants in China have been closed for a long time because of the pandemic that hit China in the past year. This decline looks even steeper than in 2016 when Canalys detected a 12% drop.
The biggest hit was by Apple, which saw a drop in shipments of 21% followed by HP with 13.8% fewer shipments and Acer with 12.6%. Dell appears to be the only company to increase its shipments by 1.1%.

According to Canalys, the computer market saw an increase initially. Parents were forced to obtain a computer so their children could attend online courses. At the same time, however, the employees of the companies could not go to work, so they started working from home.
But the bad news doesn’t stop here for computer sales. The second quarter is expected to be even tougher and as Canalys says the market will take an even bigger hit.
