Snapdragon 480 improves budget 5G Phones
Qualcomm has announced the Snapdragon 480 which makes the 5G more affordable than ever since it is its first chipset to feature the new and fast 5G technology for devices close to $200.
Snapdragon 480 doubles low-end CPU performance and GPU performance by adding support for 120Hz Full HD displays. Qualcomm dominates the Android chipset market in the US, but that’s not the case in the rest of the world. MediaTek’s fierce competition in China and India propelled the company to second place worldwide, according to Counterpoint Research. Samsung’s Exynos chips also cut Qualcomm’s market share.
The Snapdragon 480 has the biggest jump in CPU and GPU performance we’ve ever seen from any Qualcomm chipset in years. Qualcomm promises twice as much CPU and GPU performance as the previous Snapdragon 460. As far as the camera is concerned, the 480 now comes with ISP support for simultaneous processing of three 13 megapixel cameras, zooming in on phones with multiple cameras. It can take 1080p video and 64 megapixel photos.

There is also a great improvement in the performance of the voice assistant as well as the cancellation in the noise of video calls. For 5G, the 480 supports both the sub-6 and the “millimeter-wave”, which is an exciting differentiator over MediaTek. While Qualcomm is now on the third-generation mmWave chipset, MediaTek has not yet built one and the latest rumours say it will be delayed until mid-2021.
